🎧 WiFCERM Lunchtime Learning: The Power of Listening 🎧
On the 18 September, WiFCERM welcomed Emily Beasley, Operations Manager at the Environment Agency, for a truly inspiring Lunchtime Learning session on a skill we often overlook: the power of listening.
🎥 The recording:
Emily’s session was packed with practical wisdom and thoughtful reflection, reminding us that listening isn’t just a passive activity—it’s a powerful tool for connection, collaboration, and leadership. Here are three standout takeaways that left a lasting impression:
🔹 Listen to Understand, Not to Respond
How often do we find ourselves crafting a reply while someone is still speaking? Emily challenged us to shift our mindset: be fully present, absorb the message, and respond with understanding and empathy. This simple change builds trust and leads to richer, more meaningful conversations.
🔹 Manage Inner Distractions
Our minds are busy places—full of thoughts, judgments, and mental to-do lists. Emily encouraged us to notice when our attention drifts and gently bring it back. By doing so, we become better listeners and more effective communicators.
🔹 Create a Listening-Friendly Environment
Phones down, inbox closed. Emily reminded us that genuine attention is a gift. Eye contact, silence, and emotional presence show respect and invite openness. It’s not just about hearing—it’s about being there.
